Growth Core J-1013 – Surface Technologies Net (2010-2013)

The Wachstumskern (Growth Core)

The region of Eastern Thuringia is characterized by long-standing traditions in the optical, ceramic and textile industries, which have successfully mastered the process of adaptation after 1990. Partners with proven competencies in the field of glass/ceramics in the Jena region and expertise in the textile segment in the Gera/Greiz region have joined forces with technology developers to form an innovative regional growth core.

"J-1013" (standing for Jena 1013 mbar) aims to create special material-independent product properties through the selective combination of atmospheric pressure coating processes. This is achieved via the J-1013 intermediate layer. The J-1013 intermediate layer can be applied to any type of material and geometry.

J-1013 can use these advantages, among others:

  • Granted process patents for the individual processes to be combined at the allies
  • Easily integrated process technology into existing production lines
  • Reduction of development times by 50 percent
  • Own plant construction, modern plant technology
  • Technological breadth and process combination
  • Networks in the region, which enable a lively exchange of experience
  • Established conferences, colloquia and user groups

Access to multiple market segments makes J-1013 less vulnerable to crises.

The Objectives

We combine atmospheric pressure coating processes to apply an intermediate layer to any type of substrate (different material types and geometries). Through our procedure we achieve an independence of the functionality from the material.

Our short term goal is the realization of the J-1013 technology platform. In the medium term we want to convince our customers of the J-1013 technology and transfer our competences to other industries. J-1013 will initially operate nationwide and gradually expand into the European, North and South American and Asian markets. The gradual market penetration will help to strengthen confidence in the new technology.

The Projects

The alliance is carrying out five projects that are closely interlinked. Three types of collaborative projects can be distinguished. Project No. 1 develops the technological basis ("technology construction kit"). Projects Nos. 2 - 4 develop prototypical applications to test the technology construction kit, and Project No. 6 is devoted to the qualification of personnel.

Technology Building Kit

This project aims at the development of the combination technology, as well as measurement and analysis methods for the characterization of this technology and the coatings produced.

Composite coatings

Realization of coating concepts on very different substrate materials for the production of composite systems without cost-intensive vacuum technology.

Protective Coatings

Development of tailor-made nano-structured protective layers on various substrates at atmospheric pressure. This is done with the view onto growth markets, such as: microsystem technology, technical textiles, medical technology, sensor and communications technology.

Antimicrobial coatings

Application of permanent antimicrobial layers in the form of functionalized nanofilms on different substrates.

Qualification

Creation of training and further training contents in the form of training letters for skilled workers and academics, tailored to the target group.
